Books on Firearms Training

A Gallup poll in February 2008 found that 34 percent of Americans own at least one gun and that 73 percent believe the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees the rights of Americans to own guns. With those statistics in mind, it would seem to be important for these Americans to have firearms training and learn safe use of the guns they own.

    • Daniel L. Barber's book covers basic shooting techniques, including loading and reloading, flashlight techniques, clearing jams, street cover and concealment, dealing with malfunctions and improving qualification scores.

    Crucial Elements of Police Firearms Training

    • Subtitled "Refine Your Firearms Skills, Training and Effectiveness," Brian R. Johnson's book covers firearm-related laws, shooting techniques and target analysis and provides instruction on precision combat-shooting under duress.

    Teaching Women to Shoot: A Law Enforcement Instructor's Guide (Paperback)

    • Authors Diane Nicholl and Vicki Farnam deal with the problems of beginning and remedial shooters, describe why women learn differently from men, provide practical solutions and help men to understand how women learn and the physical size problems they have with guns designed for men.

    Women Learning to Shoot: A Guide for Law Enforcement Officers (Paperback)

    • Although Nicholl and Farnam repeat important fundamentals, this book is not for beginners. The book is intended for gun owners who want to improve their performance. The authors specifically focus on women and those with smaller hands and less upper body strength and what they need to do physically and mentally to consistently hit the chosen target.

    The Concealed Handgun Manual: How to Choose, Carry and Shoot a Gun in Self Defense

    • Author Chris Bird explains how to choose a defensive handgun and covers the pros and cons of pistols versus revolvers and caliber. The author discusses basic and advanced shooting methods and alternatives under various situations, how to conduct yourself in a gunfight, how best to practice and handgun concealed carry laws in each state.
