Private Firearms Training

Private firearms training can be provided by any individual, one-on-one, on an informal basis. However, most states now require a firearms safety course be taught by a qualified instructor prior to purchasing a firearm and/or carrying a concealed firearm.
  1. Types

    • Basic firearms safety courses show how to safely handle, store, load, unload and fire a handgun or long gun (rifle). More involved courses at dedicated firearms training facilities such as Sig Sauer Academy or Front Sight Firearms Training Institute teach courses such as defensive pistol, shotgun and rifle, defensive submachine gun, and advanced tactics for handgun and rifle. All can be taught privately in a one-on-one setting.

    Time Frame

    • The shortest private firearms training courses, such as the firearms safety courses, last only a few hours. Others, such as the defensive handgun and rifle courses, can take anywhere from two to four days.

    Fun Fact

    • Facilities such as Front Sight offer private, individualized training for individuals such as high-profile executives and movie stars preparing for roles involving gunplay.
