Johns Hopkins' compliance training courses are available in research, billing and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Courses are conducted through a combination of seminars, workshops, Web-based and classroom-based learning. For individuals involved in research, some of these courses, such as the human subjects research course, are required to be eligible for grants and other financial contributions.
Training course options in research include animal care and use, conflict of interest and commitment, guidelines for export control and a course on research ethics. For individuals involved with medical billing, course offerings include, provider training, evaluation and management and resident fellow training. HIPAA compliance courses include general privacy issues, accounting for health information disclosure, research-related privacy issues and business relationships.
To receive certification in each course, students must take a knowledge assessment examination upon completion of the program. A minimum passing grade of 85 percent is required for certification. The test may be taken more than once if the student is unsuccessful in obtaining the minimum grade.
