eFoodhandlers Inc. offers an online food handlers certification program with five steps to obtain your certification: register, study, pay fee, take exam and print certificate. In addition to the certificate, you and your employer will each receive a food handler card. Topics addressed in the program include hand washing, food-borne illness, temperature control, preventing spread of disease and safe storage practices. The program provides students with a study guide that includes detailed information for the exam such as cooking requirements for specific foods, types of food thermometers, date marking and how to properly cool various types of foods. States might have their own food handler regulations, and eFoodhandlers includes exams for all states.

The Safe Food 4 U online food handler certification course provides a certificate that's accepted throughout Texas. Established in 2004, the program is accredited by the Texas Food Handler Program (FHP) that requires employees working with unpackaged food, food equipment, food contact surfaces or food utensils to be registered within 30 days of employment. Many cities in Texas require registrants to show proof of food handler training. Upon completion of the course, you receive a Texas Department of Health State Food Handler Card that is good for two years. The instructors are food service professionals--including previous restaurant inspectors--and are experienced in teaching food safety.

The Sonoma (California) Department of Health Services offers Food Safety Handler Certification classes that meet State of California Food Handler Certification requirements. The state requires that each food facility must have at least one person who has been certified for food safety. Other regulations state that the certificates will be good for five years from the date on the certificate, even if the certificate has an expiration date. After five years, you must pass an exam to be re-certified. The cost of the course includes a textbook, Food Safety Management Principles" available in several languages. However, the test is available only in English or Spanish. Should you fail the test, you may retake the test for an additional charge.
