Free classes for GED preparation in math, English and writing are offered by the Adult Learning Center of the Boston Public Schools. Students also receive computer information in classes. These courses are held each day during the school year from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students are individually assessed and placed in an appropriate class for their level. The Adult Learning Center helps students register for the GED test.

X-Cel Adult Education Services offers pre-GED and GED preparation classes for its students. Reading and writing skills are taught Monday evenings from 6:30 to 9 p.m., while math is taught on Wednesday nights in the same time period. Students must be 18 years old or older to attend. Volunteers teach most classes. For those who have passed the GED, college-prep-test skills are also taught. GED classes are taught in five locations in the Greater Boston area.

This program for high-risk and homeless young people offers classes to improve math, reading and writing skills to enable them to pass the GED. Open to those from 14 to 24 years of age, Bridge Over Troubled Waters also offers job counseling and training. Breakfast, lunch, and health-care and hygiene information are also provided.
