Determine your eligibility for national board certification. Teachers must have a bachelor's degree, three years of teaching experience and a state teaching license to be eligible for national teaching certification.
Complete four portfolios for submission as part of the application process. The first portfolio must focus on student work samples. The second and third portfolio are videos of your teaching and interacting with students. The fourth portfolio details your accomplishments in the community that affected student education.
Take computer-based assessments at an approved testing center. These six exercises focus on specific content knowledge for your area of teaching. Each exercise takes 30 minutes to complete. According to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards website, there are more than 300 testing centers across the United States. See the Pearson VUE website at www9.pearsonvue.com to find the testing center closest to you. Pearson VUE is the approved testing center that administers the national teaching certification tests.
Upon completion of these exercises and the submission of the portfolios, your completed application will be reviewed and scored by a minimum of 12 trained teachers.
