      Decide which type of certification you want to apply for and determine if you are eligible to apply. The ASCP offers certification in five fields: 1) technician certification (PBT, HT, MLT, DPT); 2) technologist certification (BB, C, CG, CT, H, HTL, MLS, M, MB); 3) specialist certification (SBB, SC, SCT, SH, SLS, SM, PA); 4) diplomate certification (DLM); and 5) international ASCPi certification (MT, MLT, MB, PBT, CTgyn). You will want to visit the website for specific application requirements for each category of certification.

      Decide if you are applying for state licensure. If you decide you are applying for state licensure, mail your application to: ASCP - Board of Certification, 33 W. Monroe St., Suite 1600, Chicago, IL 60603. You can download and print the state licensure application from the ASCP website.

      Gather education and experience documentation. According to the ASCP website, "you'll need to provide documentation of your education and training and specified experience requirements that you've fulfilled in your area of specialization." You will need to demonstrate documentation of your education experience, work experience and laboratory experience.

      Apply for the examination. According to the ASCP website, applicants should "complete and submit the application form with the non-refundable application fee, along with all the documentation ...." According to the website, there are two options for applying. You must apply online if you pay by credit card or mail in your application if you pay by check or money order.

      Take the examination. Once the ASCP board approves your application, you will have 3 months to take the examination. You will want to schedule your examination (examination schedules are available on the ASCP website) and study for your examination. Keep in mind that ASCP examinations are all computer-based.

      Wait for your certification to be mailed to your home address. Within 10 business days of taking the ASCP examination, you will receive your scores. If you pass the examination, your certification will be mailed to you within 4 to 6 weeks and is valid for 3 years.
