GED Programs in Washington

In 2003, the state of Washington reported that one out of every six high school credentials issued in the state was a General Education Development (GED) credential. Seen as an equivalent to a high school diploma in most areas of the country, the GED credential can open a number of opportunities for future education and careers that may have been closed without such education. Because of the importance of this credential, most community colleges in Washington offer preparation courses.
  1. Bates Technical College

    • The GED preparation class at Bates Technical College in Tacoma focuses on preparing students for the reading, social studies, science, math and writing questions that will appear on the GED exam. Each student is given an assessment to determine their levels of reading and math proficiency. This early assessment also allows instructors to address potential problems, such as testing anxiety.

Each GED student at Bates is given an individualized lesson plan so that they can focus on the areas in which they need the most help. Bates also provides a number of practice GED exams so that students are prepared for the types of questions and the intense testing situation they will face at the actual exam.

Students who enroll in the GED prep class at Bellevue College must have at least a seventh grade reading level. All students will participate in a new student assessment, which provides the instructors an idea of each student's abilities and the area in which she needs the most review.

    Spokane Community College

    • Spokane Community College offers a GED preparation class for adult learners 19 years of age or older who did not complete their high school diploma studies. Students ages 16 through 18 can also enter the GED preparation classes, as long as they provide an official release form from their school district's Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. This form indicates that the student has withdrawn from school and will not earn his or her diploma.

The GED preparation program instructs its students in the areas that are covered on the GED exam: mathematics, science, social studies, writing skills and arts. Those enrolled in the GED class can also receive computer literacy training and keyboard training in order to help them prepare for careers or continuing education that will involve technology.

Spokane Community College also offers its GED preparation classes online, for those who have heavy time restraints or who would prefer to study from home rather than in a classroom setting.
