Adults throughout Alabama find GED programs at nearby community colleges. Community colleges are ideal places to complete GEDs because of their continuing education programs. Continuing education programs help returning students improve reading skills and gain certifications needed for employment.     • Calhoun Community College operates GED testing programs at its Decatur and Huntsville campuses. The Calhoun Adult Education Program is staffed by advisers and volunteers familiar with the benefits of GED certificates. Students can attend GED classes and complete practice tests for free before proceeding to the formal test. After completing the GED practice test, students who achieve scores above ninth-grade levels can use the school's online GED classes. Successful GED students attend a special graduation ceremony each May.

    Lawson State Community College

    • Lawson State Community College holds GED courses at its Birmingham and Bessemer campuses. The Adult Education Program at Lawson State offers free GED classes on weekday mornings and evenings. GED instructors at this Alabama community college work one-on-one with students to track progress toward the test. Students take free practice tests and retest for specific sections of the GED before paying for the actual test.     Northeast Alabama Community College

    • Northeast Alabama Community College offers GED courses and tests for students in the Rainsville area. Students can take classes in mornings and early evenings Monday through Thursday. GED preparation courses at Northeast Alabama Community College also can be completed online. Students at the college find test dates every two weeks with registration required at least seven days before each test. Successful students attend a GED graduation ceremony in early May. The school's Cecil B. Ward Learning Resources Center is open to GED students in need of test booklets, dictionaries and textbooks.

    H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College

    • H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College serves GED students at its Trenholm and Patterson campuses in Montgomery County. The school also offers free GED classes on weekday nights at satellite campuses in Bullock, Elmore and Macon Counties. Students are only required to bring paper, writing utensils and dictionaries as the school gives out textbooks and sample tests. GED instructors work individually with students on the five areas of academic competency to avoid rushing past important information. The GED Online program at this Alabama college accommodates working professionals unable to attend in-person classes.
