Firearms Training in MD

According to the Responsible Gun Safety Act, since 2002 Maryland citizens are required to have proof of firearm safety training in order to make a first purchase of a firearm. While those owning firearms prior to 2002 are not mandated to attend a training course such as those listed here, it is highly recommended they participate in order to achieve a better understanding of firearm operation and safety.
  1. Maryland Firearms Training Group

    • The instructors at the Maryland Firearms Training Group have combined backgrounds in law enforcement, military and international security operations. Classes cover basic and advanced firing techniques, safety awareness and self-defense. The Maryland Firearms Training Group trains for multi-state concealed carry permits, home invasion and the use and maintenance of firearms ranging from Glock, Beretta, Colt, Ruger, Remington and more.

    Mid-Atlantic Firearms Training

    • The Mid-Atlantic Firearms Training programs are run by Brian Fletcher, a Maryland State qualified firearms instructor. Courses are available for women and youth of legal age. Classes can also be customized according to the student's needs--anything from a few hours long to several days, and taught through private instruction at the student's home or office. Check the training calendar for a full list of regularly scheduled programs.

    Maryland Gun Training Center

    • Founded by a former Marine Corps gunnery sergeant, the Maryland Gun Training Center offers a variety of gun handling classes, each of which are led by professional and certified firearm instructors. Classes include basic rifle, handgun and shotgun training, home firearm safety and personal protection. Those seeking to improve their firearm handling and accuracy may also register for the Civilian Marksmanship Program. All classes are held the last Sunday of the month.

    Maryland Police Commission Firearms Safety Training

    • Maryland's Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services offers an online firearm training course for Maryland residents. This course satisfies one of several requirements for owning a firearm. This course has no cost and averages thirty minutes for a person to complete it. It does require an internet connection. Topics covered include handgun cleaning and maintenance, safe transportation of firearms and a final test which participants must pass in order to complete the course.

    Maryland Hunter Education Programs

    • With both online, classroom and home workbook courses available, the Maryland Hunter Education Programs focus on firearm training for hunters in Maryland. Courses are run by volunteer instructors and can be completed over a weekend or several week nights. Course cover traditional firearms as well as muzzleloading and safe hunting procedures.
