Nearby states Virginia and Pennsylvania both have military colleges unaffiliated with particular branches of the service. These schools have the same rigid, demanding schedules as the other programs. In Pennsylvania, the Valley Forge Military Academy and College offers both a secondary school and a college. The college is a two-year program that prepares graduates for service placements or military universities. In Virginia, the Virginia Military Institute, the nation's first military college, is a four-year program that trains cadets in one of four ROTC programs.
