Military Engineering Schools

No four-year university in the country educates students in the field of military engineering quite like the academies of the U.S. military. These schools function as accredited four-year universities and prepare students to assume an officer's role in a particular military branch upon graduation. Each academy landed in the top 16 of College Crunch's 2009 "Best Schools for Engineering Majors."
  1. U.S. Military Academy

    • The Department of Systems Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, comprehensively trains cadets in the areas of military, environmental, operational and organizational engineering. Cadets will also participate in research projects using the very latest in military technology such as the Information Visualization Laboratory and Constructed Simulation Lab. These facilities, along with technology incorporated into every classroom, give military engineering cadets an advantage in developing innovative problem-solving techniques with regard to economic, environmental and military issues.

    U.S. Naval Academy

    • The U.S. Naval Academy prepares its engineering students to successfully maintain and operate the military branch's wide array of military weaponry and equipment. Specializations in engineering within the academic program include weapons and systems, aerospace, electrical/computer, naval architecture and ocean. Midshipmen delve into the hands-on world of managing and innovating the Navy's existing systems through a project-based curriculum designed to create midshipmen with a working knowledge of multiple military systems used in the Navy and Marine Corps.

    U.S. Air Force Academy

    • The Department of Engineering at the U.S. Air Force Academy is broken into six distinct schools: aeronautics, astronautics, civil and environmental, electrical and computer, engineering mechanics and systems engineering. Each of these departments focuses on training cadets to maintain specific elements within the Air Force's vast military infrastructure. For instance, candidates majoring in mechanical engineering focus on maintaining aircraft like fighter jets and develop an understanding of how the precise calculations involved in mechanical systems effect a pilot's ability to fly his plane.
