The military schools in Arkansas date as far back as 1881. Military institutions have developed in the state because of its historical importance to the US Army. The Tower Building of Little Rock, the capital city, acted as a military arsenal when it was built in 1840. The arms depot was used during the Civil War and is now a military war museum. Arkansas also is the birthplace of General Douglas MacArthur, a supreme commander during World War II.
There are four military schools currently enrolling students. Arkansas State University ROTC offers four-year training for future officers wanting a focus on leadership. Carson Long Military Academy, founded in 1920, is a preparatory school for those wanting to enter the military; it aims to develop students' character and confidence while also focusing on discipline. The Arkansas National Guard offers associate, bachelor's, master's and professional degrees, as well as vocational certificates. The US Army Corps of Engineers has a site in the Little Rock District of Arkansas with an Army intern program for training.
Military training schools follow a curriculum based on a core of ideas. An important aim is to instill discipline so that once a student graduates they can fit into life in the US military. They also seek to build a person's character through team work, which is a vital part of the military. Students are expected to have pride in their country and want to protect it, while some students prove they have the potential to be future leaders; Arkansas State University in particular wants those planning to be future leaders to apply.
The military is considered a lifelong vocation and should not be entered into lightly. The US Army, in particular, has well-being programs to ensure you and your family have a good quality of life. Support is given to families and officers before, during and after deployment.
