Northwest Military Schools

Military schools provide an opportunity for those seeking discipline that a typical college education may not provide. Such institutions, which include two-year institutions as well as university programs, focus on community and values such as honor, service and integrity, while placing an emphasis on physical conditioning and structured activities.
  1. Oregon Military Schools

    • Corvallis-based Oregon State University offers Reserve Officer Training Corps, or ROTC, in the Navy, Army and Air Force. The naval Midshipman program can lead to an officer position in the Navy or Marines. Graduation from OSU's Army ROTC leads to a title of second lieutenant and a commission into active-duty Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard. The Army ROTC program focuses on leadership development, with courses in military science. The University of Portland also offers a military science and ROTC leadership program, leading to appointments in the military upon graduation. ROTC at both schools complements a four-year degree and is open to any enrolled student.

    Washington Military Schools

    • Washington has two ROTC programs -- one at Spokane Community College and the other at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. The SCC program allows students to earn additional credits through four Army ROTC courses. Enrollees take beginning courses in their freshman and sophomore year, and advanced courses in their junior and senior year. Its ROTC graduates are commissioned as officers in the U.S. Army, National Guard or Reserve Forces. EWU's ROTC program covers a four-year curriculum in the military science department, with life skills and leadership as focal points of the program.

    Montana Military Schools

    • The Montana State University system ranks in the top 15 percent of all national ROTC programs, according its website, and features a top Ranger Challenge competition team. The four-year program includes courses in marksmanship, map-reading, battle-drills and military law. The University of Montana also offers a four-year program, with basic and advanced courses.

    Idaho Military Schools

    • The University of Idaho, located in Hagerman, has a four-year Navy ROTC program that develops Midshipmen. Pocatello-based Idaho State's Army ROTC program commissions Army, Reserve and National Guardsmen, and features military science classes and summer training events. Boise State boasts similar ROTC offerings, and all three programs allow students to concurrently acquire any bachelor degree the schools offer.
