Colleges in Arkansas With Football Teams

Collegiate football in Arkansas has a deep tradition dating to the late 1800s. Several colleges in the state belong to well-known athletic conferences, have famous programs and boast a list of graduates that have gone on to play on the professional level. Five schools in Arkansas are members of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I conference, the top-tier of college athletics.
  1. Arkansas State University

    • Arkansas State University began its football program in 1911. Founded in 1909, the public school is the flagship of the Arkansas State University System. Known as the Red Wolves, the athletic department is a member of the 13-member Division I Sun Belt Conference. The team won the 2005 conference championship. Since 1939 when Clifton Mack joined the Detroit Lions, over 100 ASU players have been drafted into the National Football League including six who played in Super Bowls. Former ASU assistant coach Mike Tomlin coached the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Super Bowl XLIII title in 2009.

    University of Arkansas

    • Founded in 1871, the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville is the flagship campus of the University of Arkansas system. The athletic department is a member of the powerful Division I Southeastern Conference, among the wealthiest and most successful conferences in the nation. Some of the most famous football players in its history are Arkansas graduates including kicker Pat Summerall and linebacker Cliff Powell. The famous Arkansas-Texas game of 1969 was a turning point in the racial and political history of collegiate sports. Students protesting against the Vietnam War and black students rallying against the playing of the Confederate song “Dixie” at football games demonstrated.

    University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff

    • The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) is a historically black college founded in 1873, and is the second-oldest public college in the state. UAPB is a member of Division I Southwestern Athletic Conference along with nine other historically black schools. Known as the Golden Lions, UAPB played for the SWAC championship in 2006 but lost to Alabama A&M. Players from UAPB who have played in the NFL include Cleo Miller, Mark Bradley, Dante Wesley, Ivory Lee Brown and Martell Mallett.
