While companies may provide in-house training to select employees, mentorships for example, there are also "off-the-shelf" solutions available. These are ideal for companies that wish to provide employees the resources to improve their skill set, particularly those they feel have earned the opportunity. These options consist of general warehouse and logistics education to very specific, detailed courses covering specialty areas. Some of these options include global logistics, essentials of warehouse operations and training on purchasing techniques.
For those that wish to learn and grow in the warehousing and logistics field on their own, at their own pace, there are a number of online schools that provide training opportunities. Some of these schools, DeVry University and the University of Phoenix for example, even offer programs for those that wish to have a degree upon completion of their training. There are also career-oriented online programs as well as courses that award a certificate upon successful completion.
Many community colleges around the country provide warehouse and logistics training and education. As is the case with many community college courses, these are often taught by either current or past industry professionals. These instructors are able to provide insight into the actual day-to-day role and responsibilities of warehouse and logistics personnel. San Bernadino Community College, Long Beach City College and Riverside Community College all offer courses. These are designed to provide students with the training they need to either enter the field or improve their chances for promotion.
In addition to community colleges and online Bachelor programs, there are a number of proprietary schools and state universities that provide training specifically for warehouse and logistics careers. Many of these are in the classroom, so geography may play a role in which is most appropriate. However, these types of schools and classroom-based programs are scattered across the country. As with many training options, there are general classes available covering a wide range of topics in the industry as well as courses focused on very specific areas within the field.
Some local non-profit organizations such as Goodwill Industries offer training in the warehouse and logistics field. State governments will often provide training opportunities in this and other fields for displaced or unemployed workers as well. In addition to receiving training and often certification upon completion, many of these programs are very inexpensive. Some, depending upon program specifics, may even be free for qualified trainees, as they are funded by grants and other government and industry sources.
