Schools of Practical Nursing in Massachusetts

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) typically provide care to patients in skilled nursing facilities, medical centers and clinics under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians. LPNs supervise nursing assistants, aides and orderlies. Some of their duties include giving medications, changing dressings and taking vital signs. LPNs are also permitted to start intravenous fluids (IVs) in certain states. The mean hourly wage for practical nurses was $19.28 in 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Training for LPNs is provided by community colleges and trade schools. Practical nursing programs in Massachusetts require applicants to take and satisfactorily pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) to be considered for admission.
