OSHA Regulations for Painting a Forklift

OSHA requires precautions be taken when a lift truck is painted. These precautions keep performance approval markings and safety information readable, govern materials that are applied to the forklift and limit the types of forklifts that may be driven into a paint booth or spray room.
  1. Nameplates and Decals

    • Since OSHA standard 1910.178 requires industrial lift truck users to keep labels and nameplates readable, painters must not paint over these markings. If a forklift user has modified the truck in any way that could affect the safe operation or added a front-end attachment, he must tag the modification and, if necessary, place a decal with safety information or directions at the modification. These decals must be kept clear of paint.

    Solvents and Agents

    • OSHA standard 1910.178 requires that only noncombustible agents and solvents with a high flash point be used on lift trucks. A high flash point is 100 degrees F or higher. This standard mandates that the user take fire hazard precautions based on the flash point of the agent used on the lift truck. According to this standard, the user must also take precautions appropriate for the agent's toxicity. He must ventilate the area according to OSHA ventilation standards and wear correct personal protective equipment.

Moving Forklift to Designated Paint Area

    • OSHA standard 1910.94 mandates spray-finishers enclose their operations in spray rooms or booths to isolate them from other operations. This requirement must be coordinated with standard 1910.178, which states that only electrically powered industrial trucks with an EX designation can be used in areas where combustible particles are normally or intermittently in the atmosphere. This means users must not drive lift trucks that run on gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas, into or through the paint booth or spray room. The user must not drive forklifts with an E, ES, or EE designation into the paint booth because these lifts do not have the same spark-limiting safeguards and specially designed electrical fittings that the EX trucks have. If a user wants to paint a lift truck that may not be driven into the spray room, he must transport the lift by other means.
