Training Programs for Human Resource Generalists

Human resources (HR) generalist is a management position. People in this job usually are in charge of human resources for smaller businesses. Their job can include employee benefits administration, employee recruiting, interviewing, hiring and employee training. Many HR managers will have bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as years of experience. However, they may not have training as a generalist. There are schools and organizations with short-term certificate programs in human resources generalist training.

    • University of Minnesota College of Continuing Education has a Human Resources Generalist Certificate program. Students will take 10 classes and spend 60 hours in training. They can take the classes in any order they want, but all classes must be completed within two years. Students have the option of enrolling in the accelerated program, which is completed in six months. Courses include The Human Resource Audit; Documentation and Investigations; Strategic HR Planning; Principles of Employee Compensation; and Recruitment, Staffing and Selecting.

    University of Wisconsin Superior

    • University of Wisconsin Superior offers a program for people who are new to human resources or who have never had formal training in the profession. The program consists of seven seminars, six one-day sessions and one two-day session. The seven seminars are Current Personnel Issues, Labor Management Relations, Coaching for Peak Performance, Team Building Strategies and

      Techniques, Managing Multiple Priorities, Performance Feedback Tools and Human Resource Management. Students can complete the program in one or two years or complete all seminars consecutively. Graduates receive the Human Resource Generalist Certificate.

    UNC Charlotte

    • UNC Charlotte’s continuing education department offers a human resources generalist certificate program. Students will take six required classes and two elective classes. Required classes are Employment and Labor Law, Compensation and Benefits, Fundamentals of HR Management, Employee Performance Management, Employee Retention and Talent Acquisition. The elective course options are Workplace Diversity, Human Behavior in Organizations, and Learning and Development in Talent Management. Students choose what order to take courses and have up to a year to complete the program.

    • Lake Washington Technical College's human resources generalist certificate program requires 44 credits and one year to complete. Courses include Ethics and Diversity, Employee Benefits and Risk Management, Employment Law, Employee and Labor Relations, and Mergers and Acquisitions. Classes are typically held in the evenings to make the program more convenient for working professionals.
