How to Put APA Format in Alphabetical Order With Different Articles Under the Same Author

When you're putting the final touches on a paper, it is important to get all the details right to avoid losing points for style mistakes. One of the areas that trips up many students is APA format for the reference list at the end of the paper, especially when it comes to citing different articles under the same author. If you have two references with the same author, refer first to the publication dates and then to the titles to determine which should come first in the alphabetical listing.

Instructions

    • 1

List all of your references, including the ones with duplicate authors, on your Reference List. Pay close attention to the APA style guide as you cite to ensure your listings are accurate.

    • 2

Alphabetize your list by author name.

    • 3

Look at the publication date for your citations with the same author. When the author or authors are the same, list the citation by publication year, beginning with the earliest date.

    • 4

Refer to the article titles only if both citations were written in the same year. In that case, the listings should be placed alphabetically according to title. In addition, add an "a" and "b" to the year in the citation and refer to them with the appropriate letter in your paper. For example, if both of your articles were written by Karter and published in 1980, you would write, "According to Karter(1980a) ..." when referring to the first listing.
