This two-year public college offers a certificate for a home health aide/nursing assistant through a18-week program that prepares graduates for entry-level work in the nursing field, particularly at acute care facilities, convalescent facilities, home care agencies and outpatient clinics. The program has been approved by the California State Department of Health Services and qualifies all graduates to take the Nurse Assistant Competency Examination to obtain state certification for practice. It also entitles graduates to receive Home Health Aide Certification without further examination. All applicants must be over the age of 18 and in good physical and mental health, attend a program orientation, pass a criminal background check, and take a placement test.

This fully accredited program is designed to provide graduates with the skills to meet both the physical and psychological needs of patients in either a hospital or a long-term-care facility. The curriculum includes an introduction to human relations as well as courses on physiology, bacteriology, anatomy and body mechanics. Students also participate in a cooperative externship in which they apply their skills at area hospitals. Program prerequisites include passing an Adult Basic Learning Exam (ABLE) or comparable test designated by the program administrator as well as proof of immunization and a criminal background check. The program prepares graduates for two state certification tests: a written test and a basic skills test. Both tests must be passed before a student can be certified and licensed.

The goal of this program is to instruct students in the health requirements of people 65 and older who are living in long-term-care facilities. Students learn through lectures, classroom discussions, small group studies, labs and clinical experiences. The curriculum includes courses such as Interpersonal Skills, Patient Rights, Body Mechanics, Vital Signs, Nutrition, Rehabilitative Nursing and Emergency Procedures. Prerequisites include a mandatory orientation, physical exam and standard English language test. Once students have successfully completed 63 hours of CNA course theory and 135 hours of supervised clinical work, they are eligible to take the California competency exam for certification as nursing assistants.
