The Los Angeles Electrical Training Institute apprenticeship program includes at least 160 hours of evening classroom instruction for each of the program's five years, in addition to at least 8,000 hours' on-the-job training. Physical labor is required as apprentices must climb on scaffolds and ladders, work in tight, confined spaces and consistently lift up to 50 pounds. The ability to follow instructions is also required and, since electrical wiring is often color coded, applicants must not be color blind. The school is in Commerce, about seven miles from Los Angeles.
