Los Angeles Music Colleges

Los Angeles is located in Southern California and is home to several music colleges. Programs range from technical courses involving the music industry to performance and instrumental study, and can include noncertificate programs, bachelor's degrees and doctoral programs.   1. Los Angeles Music Academy

    • LA Music Academy, or LAMA, is a music college located in Pasadena, a city in Los Angeles County. LAMA offers associate's degrees and diplomas in music production, drums, bass, vocals and guitars through lectures, workshops and practice labs. A part-time program known as LAMA Jams is also available for band workshops and private music lessons. LA Music Academy offers merit-based scholarships and financial aid help to eligible students. Housing is not provided through the academy, however, assistance is available for enrolled students. Applicants should also note that students should have basic knowledge of harmony and music theory, sight-reading and/or singing, ear training and band, choral or theater performance experience.

    Musicians Institute

    • Located in central Hollywood, Musicians Institute is a contemporary music college offering 10 bachelor's and associate's degrees, certificates or noncertificate courses in performance and industry music programs. Scholarships, financial aid and assistance with off-campus housing are available through the institute. Admission requirements vary from program to program, and more information can be obtained from admission representatives.

    USC Thornton School of Music

    • Located on the University Park Campus of the University of Southern California (USC), Thornton School of Music is a renowned music college in Los Angeles (more than 20 percent of the members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra is made up of Thornton alumni and/or faculty members). Undergraduate majors and minors, graduate degrees, certificate programs and doctoral programs are available through Thornton School to just more than 1,000 students at a 6-1 ratio of faculty to students. Types of programs offered at Thornton School include Jazz Studies, Musicology, Music Education, Popular Music, Classical Guitar and more. Applicants are required to apply to USC and include a Thornton School supplement application. Other admission requirements vary according to programs but can include lyrics, recordings, compositions and live auditions.
