Occupational Health & Safety Community Colleges in Houston, Texas

When the Occupational Safety and Health Act was enacted in 1970, its purpose was to establish national standards and accountability for workplace safety. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration oversees all aspects of that legislation, from workplace inspections to training programs for construction laborers. There are several levels of training available in Houston, and in Texas as a whole, from accredited college programs and the OSHA itself.
  1. Houston Community College: OSHA Outreach Training

    • The OSHA has training programs available for a variety of industries. These outreach programs are designed to be delivered in satellite learning locations by graduates of its train-the-trainer programs, or faculty members from vocational schools and community colleges. In Houston, the Houston Community College offers the outreach program for workers in the construction trades, and incorporates current OSHA standards into other programs such as its allied health profession certifications.

San Jacinto College: Occupational Health & Safety Technology

    • San Jacinto College, located in the Houston suburb of Pasadena, offers both an associate degree and a vocational certificate in the field of occupational health and safety technology. These programs incorporate courses including biology, chemistry, physics and a variety of health sciences topics; as well as fire prevention, safety standards and other immediately pertinent practical instruction. The associate degree may be transferred to a university, and applied toward a bachelor's degree in the field.

    Lone Star Corporate College

    • The Corporate College campus of Lone Star College is located in Houston's northern suburbs, four miles north of the Sam Houston Parkway. As the name suggests, this campus is geared to provide immediately practical training required by the local business community. Although the college does not offer a formal training program in occupational health, it does regularly host one-day OSHA training sessions. Five such programs are scheduled for 2011.

    Alvin Community College

    • Alvin Community College is located in the town of Alvin, roughly halfway between Houston and Galveston, and also maintains a second campus in the Houston-area community of Pearland, south of the city. The Pearland campus includes OSHA training in two of its continuing education programs, the construction electrician course and the industrial electrical technician course.
