LPN Programs in Alaska

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) provide direct nursing care for people who are medically ill, injured or physically disabled under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians. A certificate, diploma or associate degree in nursing is generally required for employment as an LPN. Several schools in Alaska offer such programs.

    • Alaska's Institute of Technology offers a practical nursing program at its Anchorage campus. Applicants must have current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification. They must also have completed the following college-level courses with a minimum grade of "C": anatomy and physiology, human lifespan development, microbiology, nutrition and English. Coursework includes the foundations of nursing, acute care, parent-child nursing, treatments, law and ethics, and clinical training. Graduates students receive an occupational certificate of completion they can apply toward an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing at the University of Alaska.

    University of Alaska Fairbanks

    • The University of Alaska offers a nurse aide certificate at its Tanana Valley campus in Fairbanks. The one-semester training program provides student with basic theoretical knowledge and practical skills in nursing. Graduates work as direct-care providers under the direction of registered nurses and medical doctors. Coursework includes campus lectures and clinical practice, and a 48-hour practicum in an assisted living home- or long-term care center. The program is approved by the Alaska Board of Nursing and equip students to sit for the certified nurse aide exam in the state of Alaska.

    University of Alaska

    • The University of Alaska offers an associate of applied science degree in nursing at both its Anchorage campus and its Tanana Valley campus in Fairbanks. The program consists of four semesters of combined theoretical and practical coursework, including adult nursing, pharmacology, perinatal and pediatric nursing and psychiatric nursing. Students also receive hands-on training in clinics, hospitals and nursing homes. Nursing theory coursework is also available in a distance-learning format through the use of video-conferencing and online instruction.
