The Louisiana State University Alexandria is a public college located in central Louisiana. The college's very first degree offered in 1964 was an associate's degree in nursing. Now, the Department of Nursing at LSUA offers an LPN to RN program (called the accelerated LPN) plus a five semester associate degree of nursing degree and a four-year bachelor of science in nursing degree. A campus group called the Student Nurses Association (SNA) is open to all nursing students and organizes fund-raising, community and campus health events.

The college of nursing at the Northwestern State University allows current LPN license-holders who are CPR-certified to participate in an articulation plan awarding 14 credit hours towards the associate degree of science in nursing (RN) after completing an LPN to RN transition course. Completion of the program is in four semesters. A minimum of a C grade average is required in science and math courses and a 2.7 grade point average is required in nursing-related classes.

The nursing program at Our Lady of the Lake College offers current LPN license-holders an opportunity to join the RN program in the second year of the two-year program upon completion of a seven credit hour transition course. The program is available twice per year in January and August at Baton Rouge, Tulane and East Jefferson campuses. Other nursing programs offered include a bridge curriculum for RNs to earn their bachelor's degree and a master of science in nursing.

The college of nursing and health sciences at Southeastern Louisiana University was established in 1963 and since 2005, has won the Nightingale Award for Outstanding Nursing School of the Year two times. Undergraduate nursing programs include an LPN to RN program, a bachelor of science in nursing, an RN to BS and an accelerated learning track for those who currently hold a bachelor's degree in another discipline. Post-graduate programs up to to a master of science in nursing are available. Clinical work in the program will be done in the Northshore and Baton Rouge areas.
