Schools for Broadcast Engineering

Broadcast engineers are responsible for the setup and operation of sound and audio equipment and for ensuring the quality of the equipment's sound output. A well-trained broadcast engineer can find a high-paying salary combined with an exciting work environment in areas like radio, television, theatre, concerts and film.

    • The Columbia College of Chicago is the largest private arts and media college in the United States. There are nearly 60 classes available in the college's Audio Arts and Acoustics bachelor degree program, covering everything from studio setup and troubleshooting to architectural acoustics and outdoor sound. A course covering careers in audio and several technical skills and engineering specific courses will provide a stable background for any type of career in broadcast engineering. Internship and part-time job opportunities with the city's 200 theatre groups and venues and over 35 radio stations will allow students hands-on experience in the real world while pursuing their studies.

    • The bachelor's degree in broadcasting and electronic media at Cayuga Community College is certified by the Society of Broadcast Engineers and the only community college degree program to receive a National Student Television Production Award. An FM radio station, television studio and remote truck are some of the ways students can work hands-on right from the start of their studies. Notable graduates from the program include the chief engineer for Time Warner Cable in Syracuse, Beyonce's recording engineer for the "Dangerously in Love" album, a camera operator for the NFL and an Olympic games producer, just to name a few. Those who wish to continue onto a four-year degree program in broadcast engineering may transfer credits through partnerships with Ithaca College, SUNY Fredonia, Oswego and Plattsburgh.

    • Napa Valley College's broadcast television engineering technology associate's degree program is a two-year course of study certified by the Society of Broadcast Engineers. Students who maintain a B average up to graduation will be awarded a Broadcast Technologist certification by the Society of Broadcast Engineers. According to Napa Valley, completion of the degree qualifies students for ten or more job types in the field of broadcast engineering, and companies like CNN, ESPN and Sony have made job offers to students before graduation. The Associate of Arts degree prepares students for entry-level or equips them with transferable credits to pursue a four-year degree.
