The University of West Florida is the sixth state university of the State University System of Florida. It has campuses in Pensacola, including downtown, and on the Emerald Coast. The university boasts of three colleges: arts and sciences, business and professional studies. The university also offers online undergraduate and graduate degrees. The University of West Florida has a School of Allied Health and Life Sciences that offers graduate and undergraduate health-related programs. Established in 2006, the school offers a bachelor of science in health sciences and a master of public health. It also offers certificate programs in health care ethics, medical informatics and public health.

Created in June 2000, the Florida State University College of Medicine is a community-based medical school. Medical students of Florida State University spend the first two years of their community-based clinical education at its main campus in the Tallahassee area, then move to the university’s regional campuses. The Florida State University Regional Medical School Campus in Pensacola is one of six regional campuses. At the regional campus in Pensacola, third- and fourth-year students complete their required clinical rotations. Students work with practicing physicians who provide them with mentorship and hands-on experiences. As with all other regional campuses, students at the Regional Medical Campus in Pensacola are required to do rotations in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, geriatrics, psychiatry and emergency medicine.
