College of Cosmetology Beauty Schools

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for professionals in the field of cosmetology will increase by 20 percent from 2008 through 2018, creating more than 165,000 new jobs nationwide. Though requirements vary from state to state, formal educations is typically necessary to gain a license to work independently as a cosmetologist. Among the educational providers for future cosmetologists is a variety of privately owned colleges of cosmetology or beauty schools.
  1. Milan Institute of Cosmetology

    • Milan Institute of Cosmetology features campuses in Boise, Idaho; Reno, Nevada; in California in the cities of Bakersfield, Clovis, Concord, Fairfield, La Quinta and Visalia. The cosmetology program at the school covers aspects of haircare and styling as well as nail care technology and basic skin care and make-up artistry. The curriculum also includes lessons in business to help students prepare to manage or own their own salons. A separate course for individuals who just wish to work as skin-care specialists is also available.

      Each Milan Institute of Cosmetology campus has its own onsite salon, where students gain hands-on practice working with paying customers. Every campus also carries accreditation through the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences as well as credentialing through either the Accrediting Commission for Continuing Education and Training, or the Council on Occupational Education. The length of the cosmetology training programs at the Institute vary based upon the licensing requirements for each particular state.

      Eligible students at the Milan Institute of Cosmetology can receive federal grants and loans. The school offers job-placement assistance for all graduates.

    Model College of Hair Design

    • The Model College of Hair Design is located in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The college has accreditation through the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences and offers a 10-month cosmetology program. The program begins with classroom-based coursework and hands-on practice working with mannequins. Students learn techniques for hairstyling, skincare, nail technology and applying artificial hair extensions. The latter half of the program includes practice working in the school's onsite salon. At first, students perform basic duties, and then take on increasingly more difficult tasks until they work independently under supervision with customers.

      The school also features a nine-week nail technology program for would-be manicurists as well as a four-month course is esthiology (skin care). A shortened refresher course is also offered for licensed cosmetologists who wish to brush up on skills, or for previously licensed professionals who let their credentials lapse and wish to renew them.

      The Model College of Hair Design has six on-campus residences for students, drawing people from outside the St. Cloud area and even the state of Minnesota. Qualified students can receive federal financial aid in the form of loans and grants.

    Federico College of Hairstyling

    • The Federico College of Hairstyling opened in Sacramento, California, in 1946. The family-owned-and-operated cosmetology school has accreditation through the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences. The college offers both a full and a part-time cosmetology program. The full-time program admits 16 students at a time and meets four days per week for 53 weeks. The part-time courses have eight students and meet four nights per week and on Saturday for 80 weeks. The program covers hair care, nail technology and skin care. Students work in the school's onsite salon and also have the opportunity to work at salons off campus.

      Also offered is a stand-alone esthetician training course, available in a 20-week, full-time or 30-week, part-time format. A massage therapy training program is also featured. The school offers study-abroad trips each year with past destinations including Sydney, Australia, and London, England.

      The Federico College of Hairstyling participates in federal financial-aid programs. The Student Services department helps students find job opportunities and assists with job-search-related tasks like resume-writing.
