New York State TAP Grants

New York State's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) helps New York residents with the cost of higher education by providing grants, which, unlike student loans, do not have to be repaid. Eligibility for these grants is based on family composition and income.
  1. Full-Time Grants

    • To be eligible for a full-time grant, you must be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours. Eligible students are also required to be United States citizens or eligible non-citizens, be New York residents, be enrolled in a degree program at an approved college or university in New York and to maintain at least a "C" average. You must meet income requirements and owe at least $200 in tuition and not be in default on any previously received financial aid. Students can receive between $500 and $5,000 per academic year.

    Part-time grants

    • You may be eligible for a part-time grant if you are enrolled in between 6 and 11 credit hours and have accumulated at least 24 credit hours. You must have been a freshman in the 2006–2007 school year or thereafter and meet all other requirements indicated for a full-time grant. Students receive a percentage of the applicable full-time grant based on the number of credit hours for which he or she is enrolled.

    Graduate school grants

    • Grants are also available for graduate students. Students can receive a total of eight years of assistance through the Tuition Assistance Program. Graduate students can receive between $75 and $550 per academic year.
