New York State Technical Schools

Technical schools provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to find jobs in industries such as automotive, culinary, medical assisting and cosmetology. Unlike traditional colleges and universities, technical schools typically do not require students to take many general education courses such as math and composition, so student may obtain the degree more quickly and cheaply. New York has a number of such technical schools throughout the state that focus on various trades.
  1. ITT Technical Institute

    • ITT Technical Institute (itt-tech.edu) has branches in Syracuse, Albany and Buffalo, New York. All three sites offer training in information technology (computer networking, programming and web development), computer and electronics technology, drafting and design and visual communications (media production). The Buffalo site also offers a criminal justice degree. The associate in occupational studies degree for each major requires 96 credits including general education courses such as composition and math but the remaining courses focus on the field of study with titles such as digital electronics, strategies for the electronics professional and criminal law.

    Sanford-Brown Institute

    • The Sanford-Brown Institute (sanfordbrown.edu) campus in New York City focuses on health care programs. Students major in cardiovascular sonography and technology, diagnostic medical sonography, medical assistant, medical billing and coding or pharmacy technician. Students graduate with a certificate after approximately 1,950 clock hours in classroom and field practice in their area of study. Sanford-Brown allows students to take classes on campus, online or in combination. The institute offers some programs at satellite campuses throughout the state, as well.

    Lincoln Technical Institute

    • Lincoln Technical Institute (lincolntech-USA.com) in Queens, New York, offers an automotive technology program. Lincoln schedules courses during the day, at night and on weekends to accommodate learners. Courses teach fuel and emissions systems, automotive electrical systems, diagnostics, transmissions and drive lines among the basic concepts. Lincoln does not specify the length of the program. The institute assists graduates in finding jobs as mechanics or auto technicians upon graduation from the program.

    Star Career Academy

    • The Star Career Academy (culinaryacademy.edu) has two locations in New York state: Manhattan and Syosset. The school trains students to work as pastry chefs, professional and commercial cooks, hotel and restaurant managers, medical assists, insurance and health information technicians, dialysis technicians, cardiology technicians and surgical technicians. Students learn to use applicable equipment in hands-on and classroom settings with personal attention. For instance, the academy limits enrollment in kitchen programs to 20 students. Students can receive their certificate in as little as eight months.
