Music Conservatory Summer Programs

Music students of all ages may wish to further their study by attending an intensive summer program at a music conservatory. While programs vary in duration and concentration, they typically allow students to focus on an area of music study or musicianship and hone their skills over a short period of time. Some students return to the same program summer after summer, while others may attend multiple sessions. Admission requirements for summer music conservatory programs also vary, but there are many options for students at all levels of study.
  1. Oberlin Conservatory of Music: Summer in Italy

    • The Oberlin Conservatory of Music has offered a summer program designed for instrumentalists, pianists and singers in Arezzo, Italy, since 1988. Students are of college age or older.

The program is conducted over four weeks and incorporates both music study and an intensive language program with a full immersion into Italian life. The program is the equivalent of up to seven credits at Oberlin College. Students will audition for both groups and roles in various productions held throughout the summer. There is also an accompanist apprenticeship program for pianists.

    Summer Music West

    • Young musicians looking for a summer conservatory program may be interested in Summer Music West, conducted by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Programs are available in chamber music, string and piano, symphony education, Gilbert and Sullivan, and composition. Typically, students must be able to, at minimum, read music and should have at least three years of experience with their instrument, though for some programs more experience may be necessary. Most programs are available for students between the ages of 9 and 20 years old, though the more advanced programs are specifically for older students.

The Hingham campus offers performance and studio space as well as an amphitheater for outdoor rehearsals, concerts and events. A second campus in Duxbury was added in 1980, which is now housed in the Ellison Center for the Arts.
