The athletic department at Bryan High School, 90 miles northwest of Houston, Texas, operates a student-trainer program where 18 supervised student athletic trainers oversee the school's 22 university interscholastic league (UIL) and gymnastics teams. Of the school's 3,800 students, 1,500 participate in student athletics. Student trainers in the program travel to away games, attend home games, observe surgeries related to sports injuries and visit professional- and college-level athletic training centers.
The school's training center features areas for cardiovascular training, sports injury and therapy treatment and weight training. Students in the program with plans to pursue college study in athletic training or sports medicine may apply for the Scott "Doc" Hess Scholarship, named in honor of the school's former athletic trainer who passed away suddenly in 2002 at the age of 44.

The College of William and Mary began the sports medicine summer camp workshop for high school students at their Williamsburg, Virginia, campus more than 25 years ago. In 2000, the school partnered with Cramer Educational Programs to expand the program. The four-day program introduces participants to sports medicine with instruction from professional certified athletic trainers.
Two levels, a basic and an advanced track, allow participants at all levels of experience to gain useful knowledge and experience. The basic track includes topics such as taping, preventing and recognizing sports injuries, emergency care and rehabilitation. The advanced track covers advanced taping and wrapping techniques, aquatic therapy and emergency planning. Advanced students visit a cadaver anatomy lab and attend a seminar on careers in sports medicine. All students receive Adult CPR certification from the American Red Cross.
