Midwifery Training Programs

Midwives are an optional part of the childbirth process, hired by parents to help coach, soothe and facilitate during the birth. People who train to become midwives learn information on nutrition, medication, breathing, and post-birthing care through specialty schools offering midwifery education. A variety of schools offer midwifery programs, both through traditional bachelor's and master's degrees or specialized certificate programs in the field.
  1. University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing

    • The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing offers a nurse-midwifery program, available through a full-time course of 1.5 years or part time over 2.5 years. The course covers topics such as professional issues in midwifery, fetal evaluation, applied pharmacology in nursing practice, clinical decision making, well-women health care, health care of childbearing women, and newborn care. Students may opt for studies abroad in New Zealand, Somaliland, Trinidad or Saipan.

The full-time course starts in each May; applicants must hold an active registered nursing license for Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Students in the midwifery program are encouraged not to have outside employment during the course of their studies. Graduates may sit for the American Midwifery Certification Board exam and may also take the Women's Health Nurse-Practitioner exam given by the National Certification Corporation.
