A midwife becomes qualified after successful completion of a midwifery degree, which usually takes three years to complete and includes practical and theoretical study. After that time, a midwife can register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and is said to be a registered midwife.
Post-qualification training may give a midwife additional training not covered in their pre-registration training and may include classes in leadership and management.
Post-qualification training may take 18 months to complete (See Reference 1), depending on the type of training being taken. Many schools offer joint nursing and midwifery programs, so post-qualification training may include nursing students in the classes.
