Information on Medical Evacuation Paramedics

Medical evacuation paramedics, sometimes called flight paramedics, use helicopters and business class aircraft as air ambulances to transport seriously injured or critically ill patients to hospitals and trauma centers that can best treat them. According to the International Association of Flight Paramedics, there are about 1,200 flight paramedics in the United States (2010).
  1. Background

    • Air medical programs are generally hospital-based in urban areas. There are approximately 277 programs using paramedics as staff members. The positions are widely coveted and highly paid. Competition is stiff. There are roughly 250 applications received for every job opening.

    Qualifications

    • Medical evacuation paramedic candidates require listing on the National Registry and the state level paramedic certification. Most programs require three to five years of experience in a high volume emergency system. Other required certifications include advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, basic trauma life support and CPR. Instructor-level certifications are preferred. Finally, candidates must pass the flight paramedic certification exam.

    Other Requirements

    • Candidates need strong decision-making skills and the ability to stay calm in high stress situations. High levels of physical fitness and strength are also necessary for lifting patients and equipment. Some positions require a valid passport.
