Entry Level Occupational Therapy Programs

Occupational therapists are trained to help patients improve their abilities to perform everyday tasks in their living and working environments. A master’s degree is the typical minimum requirement to enter into the career field of occupational therapy. The following programs provide students with entry level preparation to enter the occupational therapy field.
  1. Grand Valley State University

    • Grand Valley State University has a master’s degree program in occupational therapy that prepares students to pursue leadership roles in non-traditional and traditional environments. Students may complete this program in four semesters of academic study followed by two semesters of fieldwork. The required courses include foundational perspectives in occupational therapy, foundations of child and adolescent practice, meaningful living through occupation, foundations of adult practice and foundations of older adult practice.

    Columbia University Medical Center

    • Columbia University Medical Center has a Master of Science program in occupational therapy that prepares students to enter into the field of occupational therapy or to advance their studies with a doctoral degree in occupational therapy. Students may complete this program in 24 months of study that includes all required fieldwork. Students who prefer to complete the program at a slightly slower pace, have the option of following a three-year curriculum plan.

    Washington University School of Medicine

    • Washington University School of Medicine offers entry level students the opportunity to earn either a master’s degree or a doctoral degree in occupational therapy. Students in this program take courses that include theory and foundations for occupational therapy practice, management in a changing practice environment, disability and social policy, self-management in chronic health conditions and biological basis of daily performance.

    University of Minnesota

    • The University of Minnesota has an occupational therapy program that is delivered in a hybrid format and leads to a master’s degree upon completion. Students are admitted into the program during the fall semester of each year and can complete the program after 21 to 25 months of study. Students take courses during the day and online, on subjects that include public and professional engagement, foundations of occupational science and occupational therapy, functional anatomy and kinesiology and management of occupational therapy services.
