Rice University Department of Sociology offers a postdoctoral program designed to develop the careers of postdoctoral students interested in research and teaching. Students conduct their chosen research under the tutelage of a faculty mentor and teach one undergraduate class during the course of their two-year fellowship. The department encourages them to be active in the departmental community and to attend optional departmental lectures and events. The fellowship stipend is generous at $50,000 per year plus benefits, infrastructure, including an office and computer, and a travel account of $1,000 per year.

The Ford Foundation makes postdoctoral fellowships available to United States citizens and foreign nationals with exceptional academic qualifications, a doctoral-level credential and a commitment to a college- or university-level scholarly career including teaching and research. The program, administered by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, opens applications to all races and creeds but gives preference to applications from qualified members of minority groups underrepresented in academia. Successful applicants may use the fellowship toward study in fields including astronomy, chemistry, life sciences, linguistics, ethnic studies and peace studies. The fellowship provides a $40,000 stipend for one year and requires the fellow to study at the research institution or laboratory of his choice for a period of between nine and 12 months.

The charitable foundation The New York Community Trust administers the Heiser Program for Research in Leprosy and Tuberculosis. The program provides researchers early in their postdoctoral careers with research training in the areas of either leprosy or tuberculosis or both. All postdoctoral applicants early in their careers regardless of age will be considered. Complete applications include curriculum vitae, written proof of a laboratory position if granted a fellowship, a research proposal, a list of the research sponsor's publications over the past five years, a detailed post-fellowship plan incorporating the student's scholarly development as a result of the fellowship and an Application for Fellowship Fact Sheet and Grant Payment form.

The United Negro College Fund and pharmaceutical company Merck collaborate to provide one- to two-year fellowship awards of a maximum of $85,000 to African American postdoctoral students. Each award is divided into a student stipend of up to $70,000 along with a $15,000 research grant for the department hosting the student. The student will receive no more than $50,000 in stipend funds over one year. Eligible students must hold a doctoral-level degree and legal residency in the United States.
