History Research Grants

A variety of grants and scholarships are available to students who are engaged in historical research. Several sources for history research grants, including national historical associations, as well as museums and other institutions dedicated to historical preservation are available. Many history research grants are limited to students who are researching a specific historical subject.
  1. AHA Grants

    • The American Historical Association provides a variety of grants to researchers. The Albert J. Beveridge Grant for Research in the History of the Western Hemisphere is awarded in amounts of up to $1,000 to a student researching the history of an area of the Americas. To be eligible, a student must be an AHA member. The Michael Kraus Research Grant is available in amounts up to $800 to an AHA member who is conducting research in the area of American colonial history. The Littleton-Griswold Research Grant is available in amounts up to $1,000 to AHA members conducting research in the area of legal history. The annual deadline for AHA research grants is February 15.     Smithsonian Institution Grants

    • The Smithsonian Institution gives several research grants to historians. The Guggenheim Fellowship provides a postdoctoral stipend of up to $42,000 for those who wish to conduct research in aviation and space history at the National Air and Space Museum for three to twelve months. The Lemelson Center Fellows Program provides grants in varying amounts to students who wish to conduct research pertaining to the history of American invention and innovation at the

      National Museum of American History. The Wyeth Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship is awarded to a student who wishes to conduct research at the Smithsonian American Art Museum leading to a dissertation in the history of American art traditions.

    Field Museum Research Grants

    • The Field Museum offers a variety of grants to students who wish to conduct research in the field of natural history. Natural history research grants are available in varying amounts to graduate students, undergraduate students, and even high school students. The annual deadline for applications is February 1. Applications must be submitted electronically.
