The Wenner-Gren Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting anthropology, offers grants to doctoral candidates, post-doctorates, and international scholars. Because Wenner-Gren grants are awarded to anthropologists only, judges are well aware of the possibilities and limitations of ethnographic and archaeological projects. Unlike other organizations, the Wenner-Gren Foundation holds grant competitions twice a year: once in late spring (usually May) and once in late fall (usually November).
The Social Science Research Council offers a number of grants and fellowships for anthropologists, as well as other fields of social science. Grants allow students to explore a variety of topics in a number of different countries. Grants are also available for institutions to develop graduate programs or fund graduate research. The International Institute of Education is an international organization that, in conjunction with the U.S. State Department, offers the 'Fulbright': a grant available to college graduates and doctoral candidates to engage in research abroad. The grants are only available to American citizens, but can be used for research abroad in a variety of disciplines, including anthropology. Applicants apply to their country of choice, but applications are first judged by an American committee. Anthropologists have had a large degree of success with the Fulbright program, but only countries that participate in the Fulbright program can be selected as locations of research.
