Army Research Grants

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Army Research Office (ARO) is in charge of providing grants to researchers whose findings can help the army. The ARO looks to support research that can help modernize the army, fight terrorism, thwart emerging threats and create better defense technology. Given this broad mission, research grants can be found for engineering, information science, physical science and medicine. The ARO provides grants to universities, businesses and nonprofit research laboratories.
  1. Medical Grants

    • The U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command (USAMRMC) offers research grants to universities, businesses and nonprofit groups to conduct research that goes toward helping soldiers' medical problems when they are on active or inactive duty. The USAMRMC has an estimated $1 million to allocate at its discretion. Grant applications for the current round are to be closed by September 30, 2010. About 1,000 awards are expected to be granted.

    Engineering Grants

    • The Army Corps of Engineers issues grants through the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). The ERDC conducts research in a broad range of engineering fields that includes hydraulics, seismic engineering, the treatment of hazardous/nuclear waste, as well as more obvious fields such as military engineering and munitions engineering. This research helps the Army Corps of Engineers, which has not only defense obligations, but is also a major agency involved in constructing levees, dams and other structures that help civilians. Grant proposals for the ERDC were opened in May, 2010 and remains open until superseded.

    Chemistry Grants

    • Because chemistry relates directly to the function of batteries, explosives and propellants---all of which are used extensively by the military---the army has a vested interest in studying and advancing the field of chemistry. The ARO has broad agency grants for chemists studying electro-chemistry and catalysis, organic and inorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry, physical chemistry and theoretical chemistry.
