Animal Science Degrees in Georgia Colleges

Animal science is the study of the biology of animals, particularly pets or domesticated animals. Such a scientific specialty prepares people for becoming professionals such as veterinarians, animal nutritionists and food scientists. Several institutions of higher learning throughout the United States, including Georgia, offer Animal science programs.
  1. Berry College

    • A private, four-year liberal arts college located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Berry College offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Animal Science through its School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. Comprising the minimum of 120 credits required for completion are eight animal science courses that include Livestock Feeding and Ration Formulation, Principles of Nutrition, Genetics of Livestock Improvement, and Animal Health and Diseases. Students interested in applying to veterinary school can choose to add a pre-veterinary medicine component, taking additional science courses in the process.

    Fort Valley State University

    • Fort Valley State University is a historically black university, or HBCU, located in Fort Valley, Georgia. It offers two programs in Animal Science: the bachelor's and the master's. Thirty one of the minimum of 120 credits required for completion of the BS program are dedicated to animal science, with courses in subject areas such as nutrition, molecular biology, food engineering and preservation, and animal genetics, physiology and ethology. Students in the master's program, or MS in Animal Science, can specialize in Animal Products Technology, Animal Nutrition and Forages, or Animal Reproductive Physiology and Cell Biology. The MS requires a minimum of 36 credits for completion.

    University of Georgia

    • Founded in 1785 in Athens, Georgia, the University of Georgia (UGA) is the oldest and largest of the state's institutions of higher learning. The school offers three programs in Animal Science through the Animal and Dairy Science department of its College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Students enrolled in the BSA in Animal Science degree program need at least 120 credits to graduate, with about a fourth of them serving as the program's major requirements. The MS in Animal Science program consists of 30 credits, which include 24 credits of core courses and 6 credits dedicated to the Master's research and thesis work. As for the Ph.D. degree in Animal & Dairy Science--with special emphasis in subject areas such as biotechnology, nutrition and reproductive physiology--the necessary coursework is determined by the student's major professor and advisory committee.
