Located in southwestern Georgia, Albany State University has been in operation since 1903. The school offers a bachelor's level degree in forensic science, a program accredited by the American Academy of Forensic Science, the only such accredited program in Georgia. Students learn administrative aspects of forensic science such as evidence handling and court procedure. Closer to the end of the program, students learn how to perform forensic analysis, forensic photography and ballistics. Graduates can choose to move on to the master's degree program in Criminal Justice.
Southern Crescent Technical College was established in 2010 due to a merger between Griffin Technical College and Flint River Technical College. Located in Griffin, Georgia, this two-year institution offers an Associate of Applied Science in Forensic Technology. There are fundamental courses in science with hands-on experience in investigation technology. Courses include such topics as criminal justice, report preparation, anatomy, microbiology and computers. Students then progress to specialize in either crime scene investigation or forensic computer science. Some course components may be done at home as many general education courses are available online.
American InterContinental University offers a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Forensic Science. This on-line program teaches students about the criminal justice system, juvenile justice process, law enforcement, corrections, criminology and law adjudication. Concentration courses focus on handling physical evidence, documenting a crime scene, death scene investigation, forensic psychology and cybercrimes. A total of 90 credits is required to complete the program, 27 of which need to be general education courses such as psychology, sociology and environmental science. The final requirement for seniors is to complete a special project using research, oral presentation, report writing and teamwork. Students may choose to pursue a master's degree in forensics or crime scene investigation, also available at American InterContinental University.
Ashworth College is an online institution that provides students with the opportunity to obtain a Career Diploma in Forensic Science. The program has 13 lessons and teaches students how to analyze hair, fingerprints, fiber, bloodstains and chemicals. Students can also learn about examining DNA samples, drug and alcohol testing, reconstructing a crime scene, using forensic equipment and preparing lab reports. Graduates of this program may decide to go on to an associate's degree in criminal investigations of forensics, or pursue entry-level positions in the forensics field.
