The College of Agriculture at the University of Georgia offers an animal science major with a horse emphasis program. The equine science management program includes the study of animal nutrition, horse production and either horse nutrition and exercise physiology or applied reproduction of the horse. Laboratory work enables students to gain hands-on experience in working with horses in areas like handling and identification. Students also have the opportunity to travel to horse judging competitions in other states and take part in a variety of other extra-curricular activities.

Berry College was founded in 1902, and its campus is spread over more than 26,000 acres of woodland and meadows. The college's animal science program, which is available with a preveterinary medicine track, is open to students within the arts and science fields. Courses include stable management, equine health, equine evaluation, horse systems and management and comparative exercise physiology. Students can take courses for credit towards an animal science minor.

At Fort Valley State University, students can take undergraduate programs in agriculture and animal science, both of which include courses related to equine studies. A practical course offered within the agriculture program is horse ride, in which students learn techniques and skills required for horsemanship events. Within the animal science program, students can take a livestock judging course, which develops judging skills as well as teachingidentification and characterization of horse breeds.
