Covington, Georgia, has much to offer residents and visitors. The city features a renovated, historic downtown area accented with Victorian architecture, a community theatre, an arts association and trails through nature areas. Prospective students seeking a higher education can choose from three Covington colleges.
  1. Troy University - East Atlanta/Covington Site

    • Founded in 1887, Troy University offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The school has a strong undergraduate program, with degrees in such fields as education, biology, music, psychology and medicine.

      Graduate students can earn degrees in such studies as business administration, nursing, criminal justice, international relations and human resources management, as well as general education, history and psychology. The school also offers individual concentration areas for each degree.

      The school has a worldwide focus--as of 2010, Troy University has an enrollment of 31,000 students. Students can take advantage of the university's online courses, which use the Blackboard program. Blackboard is an online classroom tool students can use to access class documents and lessons, along with turning in class assignments.

      Student athletes can take part in such team sports as basketball, baseball, football and softball. Troy also is home to the yearly Belt Conference Basketball Tournament.

    DeKalb Technical College - Covington Campus

    • DeKalb Technical College, which was founded in 1961, offers students more than 38 career program choices. These include such subjects as computer information systems, health technologies, engineering and business.

      "The 20,000-square-foot Covington campus opened in October 1997 and consists of an administration building and two classroom buildings with 68,000 square feet of instructional space," according to DeKalbTech.edu. The school's Covington campus serves Rockdale, Newton and Morgan counties. Combined, DeKalb's campuses serve 1,200 students quarterly and about 4,300 non-credit students annually.

      Students can earn a diploma, certificate or an associate degree. The college also offers GED classes, English language training and adult education that helps students advance their basic skills. Students also can work on their degrees via online courses.

      Each quarter, the student government sponsors campus activities. The school also offers such student organizations as the American Criminal Justice Association, International Student Club, Phi Beta Lambda and two honor societies.

    Georgia Perimeter College - Newton Campus

    • Georgia Perimeter College's Newton Campus was established in 2007. The school offers students more than 38 programs and nine degrees that can be completed in conjunction with DeKalb Technical College.

      Students can major in such subjects as history, geology, foreign languages, math and journalism. The campus also is home to the Newton Campus Arts and Humanities Council. Students either can enter as a transfer student or via the career program. The college also offers an associates degree in health sciences.

      Georgia Perimeter College also offers such sports as fast pitch softball and baseball, as well as tennis and basketball. For entertainment, students can enjoy such events as Jazz on the Lawn, art exhibits and guest speakers. Student can join such organizations as the African-American Student Association, as well as art, business and drama clubs.

      "Georgia Perimeter College is among the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan two-year colleges," according to the college's website. "With more than 25,000 students (as of 2009), GPC is the third-largest institution in the University System of Georgia."
