The University of San Diego's Department of Marine Science and Environmental Studies offers a bachelor's degree in marine science. Coursework includes biological oceanography, marine environment, genetics, marine mammals, animal development, vertebrate physiology, biology of fishes, deep-sea biology and climatology. The University of San Diego has partnerships with a variety of marine science organizations, providing internship and job opportunities at organizations such as the Bahamian Field Station, San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the Center for Marine Conservation.

Students looking to further their education in marine animal science can enroll at the University of California Santa Cruz in the ocean science master's degree program. Coursework includes marine microbial ecology, marine organic geochemistry, biological oceanography, ocean ecosystems and marine geology. Students are also expected to complete and present a graduate thesis, complete three courses in research and perform one quarter of a teaching assistantship. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in animal science, biology or earth sciences, three letters of recommendation and graduate record examination scores. Applicants must also obtain a faculty sponsor from the school.
Santa Cruz also offers a PhD in ocean sciences.
