NSF Postdoctoral Grants

The National Science Foundation (NSF) offers a number of grants and scholarships for postdoctoral students. These programs provide opportunities for talented scholars and researchers to pursue studies that may, in time, benefit the society as a whole. The agency also funds certain special-interest groups, including scientists from minorities that are underrepresented in the field. Applicants for NSF grants must apply electronically, submitting the required proposal to either the government's Grants website or the NSF FastLane grant application system (see Resources).
  1. Minority Postdoctoral Research Fellowships and Research Starter Grants

    • The NSF provides grants for minority postdoctoral researchers in the social, economic and behavioral sciences.

The NSF Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences makes grants for postdoctoral and early-career research available to minority researchers. The goal of these Minority Postdoctoral Research Fellowships and Research Starter Grants is to provide opportunities to assist diverse researchers to become and continue to be involved in social science, behavioral science and economic science programs that the NSF funds. Successful applicants may use the postdoctoral fellowship or starter grants for training and/or research in any area of the social, behavioral or economic sciences.

    Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology

    • Researchers in select areas of the biological sciences may apply for NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology.

The Directorate for Biological Sciences provides select recent doctoral graduates with funding in particular areas of the biological sciences. The purpose of these Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology is to support postdoctoral researchers in their efforts to develop independently as researchers and to provide them with opportunities to pursue the research and training fundamental to their career development. For the 2010 program, the specific supported areas of biological science were Biological Informatics and Broadening Participation in Biology. These areas change over the years, depending on the changing opportunities and technologies available in the biological sciences. In addition to supporting training and research development, these fellowships seek to provide young scientists with mentors.

    Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowships

    • Star formation is the focus of one of the projects that NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowships have funded.

The NSF provides fellowships for postdoctoral students whose research interests fall within the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowships allow well-qualified, recent graduates to further their education and begin their astronomical or astrophysical research careers in an instrumental, laboratory, theoretical, observational or archival data research-related aspect of either field. Successful applicants receive fellowship support for three years. Grant amounts vary but have exceeded $200,000. Previously funded projects include those in the areas of dark energy investigations, dynamo activity simulations and star formation studies.

    Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships

    • Earth sciences is another field of study for which the NSF makes postdoctoral grants available.

The NSF Division of Earth Sciences also provides field-specific fellowships for Ph.D. graduates with exceptional qualifications. No more than three years must have passed between the researcher's graduation and the fellowship application. Fellowships provide two years of support and the supported researcher has the option to choose where to carry out her fellowship research. Like the NSF astronomy and astrophysics fellowships, fellowship amounts vary. Previously funded projects have included a $136,247 award for the study of the geodynamic setting of the bushveld complex and an $85,000 award for the mapping of sharp interfaces in continental rifts.
