Consisting of 72 credits, the program includes courses such as nursing pathophysiology, common concepts of adult health and end of life issues. Fourteen of the credits consist of anatomy and physiology, chemistry and English composition courses.
Formerly known as Collin Community College, Collin College is located in Plano, a city within the Dallas metro area and about a 30-minute drive away. Like Brookhaven, Collin's associate nursing program consists of 72 credits. Its courses include life span psychology, integrated nursing skills and integrated care of the client with complex health care needs. The prerequisite courses consist of two anatomy and physiology courses, and microbiology and statistics classes.
The Dallas Nursing Institute, unlike Brookhaven and Collin, is solely dedicated to nursing education. Also students at DNI can earn the associate nursing degree in a shorter 80-week time period, with the curriculum split into five terms. Its courses focus on subject areas such as disease management, dosage calculations, mental health nursing and developmental psychology. DNI also offers an LVN-to-RN transition track for licensed vocational nurses.
Tarrant County College is located in Forth Worth. Like Collin, Fort Worth is part of the Dallas metro area, and it is about a 40-minute drive away from the city itself. At Tarrant, students in the associate nursing program take courses such as care of children and families, foundations for nursing practice, and maternal/newborn nursing/women's health. Additionally, the program offers a fast-track option for LVNs and certified paramedics.
