The College of the Mainland (com.edu) is Texas City's community college. The college, often referred to as COM, dates back to the 1960s, when Texas City residents voted to fund a technical community college for students. The college officially began construction in 1966 and opened for the fall semester in 1967.
At the College of the Mainland, students can enroll in one of the 70 academic programs provided by the school. COM offers a range of associate's degrees in the arts or sciences as well as degrees in a variety of fields such as business and graphic arts. Unique programs include Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services, Cosmetology, Petrochemical Process Technology and Fire Protection Technology.
The College of the Mainland hosts many of the major cultural and arts facilities for Texas City. The Theater Department runs a community theater that has multiple showings throughout the year open to students and the public. Every month, one film chosen by the Film Series organization is shown to the public. The films include movie classics and are shown in the large auditorium on campus. There are also regular music concerts held at the college.
