Although Utah has only one accredited medical school, those wishing to pursue a degree in medical research or a related field may want to consider Brigham Young University (BYU), the state's largest private school. Within its College of Life Science, BYU offers graduate degrees in physiology and developmental biology. Furthermore, the university has its own school of nursing that offers degrees as high as the master of science degree in the field. The College of Health and Human Performance offers degrees in health and exercise science, including a Ph.D. in exercise sciences.

If you are yet to complete your baccalaureate degree and are looking for a school that has a handle on getting its undergraduate students into medical school, you may want to consider Utah State University (USU), located in Logan, Utah. According to a 2003 article published by the Utah State University Public Relations and Marketing department, USU students received an 85 percent acceptance rate into medical school. On average, the school generally sees an acceptance rate of 60 to 70 percent, a rate that still exceeds the national average by an exceptional amount. The strength of its premed program stems from early planning and academic advising, which begins preparing students from the day they step foot on campus. The university does offer an interdisciplinary specialized degree (Ph.D.) in the field of toxicology. For students wanting to pursue a degree in a field related to medical research but not necessarily practice medicine, this might be a viable option.
